A Pottered Reflection: Warrington Conclave No.119 Celebrates Its History

At the November meeting of Warrington Conclave No.119, members were treated to a fascinating and heartfelt presentation by their Secretary, Very Wy.Bro. Brian Potter, who delivered a lecture tracing the rich and eventful history of the Conclave. Entitled “A Pottered History,” the lecture offered both an informative chronicle and a warm reflection on more than seven decades of dedication, fellowship, and Masonic continuity.

Very Wy.Bro. Potter began by recounting the founding of Warrington Conclave in 1952, when it was consecrated in the Derby Room of the Bridge Street Masonic Temple in Manchester. The Grand Supreme Ruler, the Rt. Hon. The Earl of Courtown, OBE, conducted the ceremony—a moment that set the tone for what would become one of the Order’s most enduring and active Conclaves.
From its early days, the Conclave led a somewhat nomadic existence, meeting at various venues including the Patten Arms Hotel, the Royal Oak Hotel, and later the Pelican Hotel, before finally finding its home in the Warrington Masonic Hall in 1968. These transitions, Very Wy.Bro. Potter noted, reflected both the adaptability and the enthusiasm of the members through changing times.
The lecture also highlighted the Conclave’s role in expanding the Order, with the consecration of Bold Conclave No.187 in Widnes in 1966—a testament to Warrington’s vitality and leadership within the Province. One of the more historic milestones revisited was the consecration of the Province of West Lancashire in 1974, a momentous event that linked Warrington directly with the wider growth of the Order across the North West.
A particularly nostalgic moment came as Very Wy.Bro. Potter recalled the 50th Anniversary celebration in 2002, when R.Wy.Bro. Dave Knight served as Supreme Ruler. This event symbolized not only longevity but also the enduring spirit of camaraderie that continues to define Warrington Conclave today.
In his concluding remarks, Very Wy.Bro. Potter reflected on the Conclave’s ongoing success in attracting new members and upholding the caring and supportive ethos of Freemasonry. His talk, both scholarly and personal, was received with warm appreciation from the assembled brethren—many of whom remarked that the history of Warrington Conclave is, indeed, the history of friendship, service, and dedication to Masonic ideals.
Following the closure of the meeting the brethren retired for a hearty meal of:
Starter - Herb Risotto, poached egg & herb oil
Main – Beer Battered Haddock, Chips & Mushy Peas with Tartar Sauce.
